1. Roaring Falls
This short but awesome waterfall is just a half mile jaunt round trip from the parking lot. It's located just off the General Highway in the Cedar Grove area of Kings Canyon National Park. During the summer months it's a popular swimming hole, especially for families and children because it's so easy to access.
2. Fly Fishing on the Kings River
The best time to fish on the lower Kings is anywhere between November and April when the flow is lower and the evening hatch comes through. Parachute Adams are a popular fly for the fishies in this area.
3. General Sherman Tree & Giant Sequoias
The world's largest tree in a forest of other giants, the General Sherman is the main attraction in Sequoia National Park. At about 275 feet tall and 25 feet wide, the General Sherman is between 2,3000-2,7000 years old!
4. Tunnel Tree
In 1937 an unnamed Sequoia tree fell down from natural causes into the road, and has since become a major visitor attraction. Before it fell, this giant sequoia stood somewhere around 275 feet tall and is estimated to be 2,000 years old. Now it's fun to roll through it and take cheesy photos like this.
5. Moro Rock
Moro Rock is a granite dome visible from the Generals Highway in Sequoia National Park, and rises 6,725 feet from sea level. With just a half mile round trip hiking trail, Moro Rock is a must see destination when in the park. You'll get incredible panoramic views of the canyon below and can visually point out all the rivers in the valley.
6. Montecido Sequoia Lodge
This all inclusive lodging tucked in the wilderness of Sequoia is an absolute gem of a find! It's like every kid's summer camp dreams come true - topped off with a floating dock with a slide and diving board and access to kayaks, canoes, stand up paddle boards, and fishing rods. The best part about this place is all meals are included with the fee and the meals are HOT and DELICIOUS with tons of options! When you plan a day hike and won't be available for the allotted mealtime, kitchen workers will literally pack you a lunch for on the trails. So.AWESOME.
7. Zumwalt Meadows
There are two perfect times to visit Zumwalt - sunrise, and sunset. Hike in with a headlamp and enjoy the meadow all to yourself in the quiet hours of the morning. You'll likely spot wildlife as the world slowly wakes up. The loop is about 1.7 miles, and absolutely stunning.
8. Silver City Mountain Resort
Tucked high high in the mountains of Sequoia National Park near Mineral King is a tiny little resort of cabins varying from fancy chalets to quaint rustic getaways. The road to this gem is no joke - it is long, difficult, and at times makes you think you'll never get to the top. I highly recommend making sure you have an AWD vehicle before attempting this drive, and plan around the weather. Once you're there, it's absolutely stunning. Bears are everywhere, so make yourself comfortable with the furry guys showing up on your porch and around the campgrounds. We chose to stay in one of the quaint historical cabins, Forest Glen for $100/night. The charm was immeasurable!
9. Moraine Campground
With over 100 sites to choose from, Moraine is located right on the Kings River. Prime real estate! The fee is $18/night and all sites come with a bear box for your food/smelly stuff. If you visit during July or August the Forest Rangers in the area put on programs including fire safety and astronomy - it's super fun and definitely worth checking out! There's also food and a market nearby for you to grab any last minute sundries while in the woods!
